Hype Forum

Believe it or not, this is week 8 of the NFL season.  After all the build up through July and your inability to control yourself the three days leading up to kick off, it's halfway done. As depressing as that might be it also helps us take a look back at the first half of the season, giving us an idea of what is to come for the remainder of the season. Here, I'm going to look at a player from each position that has not only exceeded expectations but also could possibly be saving your fantasy team every week. So if you have these Heros, congratulations and enjoy!

He showed us some promise early in his career for the Buffalo Bills, only to never amount to much. In Houston he looked as if he destined to be a backup QB for the rest of his days. Then he landed on a team with a solid roster. Although he was the backup to start training camp, a locker room scuffle led to a broken jaw of the starter, enter sandman. Ryan Fitzpatrick was the lead man of the New York Jets.

Of course many doubted how good he could be at this stage in his career and that reflected in fantasy draft rooms. In fact he is probably still available on your waiver wire. He won't be once you read this: he hasn't thrown over 300 yards in one game, he also hasn't had a game with less than two touchdowns. Anyone else know which other quarterbacks have thrown at least two in every game?  Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers! So yes, my "Halfway Hero Award" for quarterbacks goes to the guy who was undrafted in most fantasy formats, yet shares a major stat with the two best in the game at that position.

I'm not sure that this one is even debatable. After starting the season behind a rookie on the depth chart, this player exploded onto the scene in week three by crossing the goal line three times on his way to 140+ yards. Devonta Freeman has been more than a pleasant surprise of you own him, he has straight up won you a few weeks you should have lost. He followed that three touchdown game with a three touchdown game. Followed by another three 100 yard rushing games, one of which he took a screen 39 yards to the house. Dudes a beast and he has been around for a few years already but no one saw this level of play coming out of him. There is a good chance he ends the season as the number one fantasy running back. He's a Hero to your team and without question you snagged him off your waiver wire!

After leading the Oakland Raiders in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns last season, he was cut by the New York Giants. Which they are probably kicking themselves over given the level he has been playing at in Green Bay. James Jones has been a massive surprise this season and a headache to face in fantasy. In his last 29 games played with Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball he has 26 receiving touchdowns. Twenty-freakin-six! I couldn't find a stat even comparable with a wideout and quarterback. And just like his fellow award winners above him, he was hardly drafted, if at all in fantasy leagues, meaning he was another waiver wire steal. Are you sensing a trend yet?

Gary Barnidge
I'm sorry, Gary who? At least the three players before him were somewhat known before this season, not Gary. He has absolutely erupted in Cleveland quickly becoming Josh McCown's favorite target. Cleveland may not sound good for fantasy purposes but is proving to be. He has become the target Pac-Man for the Browns eating up every ball that comes his way. Since week three he has 29 catches for a whopping 459 yards and five scores. Those numbers leave him only behind Rob Gronkowski at his position. And being on the Browns guarantees him a year full of targets as long as Josh McCown stays healthy. Barnidge -  like everyone else on here - waiver wire.

No defense should ever be your hero! If you read articles at and ask your questions to hackhype.com every week your team is far too consistent to be depending on your defense.

So go hit the waiver wire and find your second half of the season hero! He is out there waiting for someone to snag him!
